What we ultimately need is a pecking order to adjudicate priority in the event of a conflict – e.g., if my religious conscience conflicts with the interests of my country, if the interests of my country conflict with the well-being of my family, etc. I think the only reasonable way to approach this is on a case by case basis, informed by which party to the conflict we can deem to be an unjust aggressor on the interests of the other, which is itself a matter first of determining just how much each party is entitled to ask of us. Perhaps a party may expect our allegiance to it to be in proportion with its allegiance to us – e.g., for Christians, our allegiance to God’s law ought to be unto death and transcend all other duties, as the love and forgiveness of the Almighty recompenses us with immortal life. Our nation, as guarantor of our individual rights and safety (insofar as it fulfills this, its foremost duty) is owed our fidelity in due proportion with what it offers us, which may still be something less than that we accord our filial relationships, and so on.
