Dear Sir:
First, I’d like to reveal to the reader that Mr. Gould and I are actually good friends; further, Mr. Gould is very sympathetic to The Spectator’s cause, if I can say so myself. However, he is also a true joker. With these sentiments in mind, let me address this rather humorous, yet valid letter of criticism.
While I never claimed Senator Obama was the first arrogant politician to exist, I also never claimed Bush was a shining pillar of Conservatism. As a matter of fact, I would agree term for term with the allegations of higher spending laid out by Mr. Gould. However, regardless of his record on spending, Bush’s tax cuts (as confirmed by the Heritage Foundation), have contributed to economic growth and lower unemployment. After all, as Mr. Gould so eloquently points out, Bush’s weapon of choice has been deficit spending, not taxing. Thanks for reading that article though, I really appreciate it; as a matter of fact, I think it was the first one I ever wrote for the Spectator.
Anyways, while I am devastated at the fact that “W.” has not been able to find his veto pen for most of the past eight years, I am certainly not willing to even acknowledge the possibility that four to eight years under President/Messiah Obama will not be multidudes worse with regards to government expansion. Given his penchant for research, I am confident that Mr. Gould canfind thousands, if not millions, of secondary and primary sources detailing Mr. Obama’s plans for wealth transfers, plenty of new government organizations (especially with regard to the bailout that Mr. Gould mentioned), and other various forms of organized, “necessary” statism.
Regardless, Mr. Gould is a friend of mine, and I understand his gripes. However, we must not lose sight of what is to come, because it is far, far worse – and that’s no joke.
