Sir:
For the first time in the 15 years I have worked here at Brown University I find myself agreeing with not one but two articles printed in a campus publication. The publication I refer to is the December issue of the Brown University Spectator.
First Joshua Unseth ‘09 spoke eloquently of the folly of exclusion in the interest of diversity. When I was a young man supporting Civil Rights in the 60’s in Providence the goal was inclusion, not exclusion. Forty some years later we have devolved to the point where certain words are fine for some but horrible for others to use. Progress?
Secondly Kristina Kelleher ‘09 nails the absolute folly of gun control. There are 3 main groups who oppose arming law abiding citizens with concealed weapons. First are the criminals. They want victims period. the second group is law enforcement organizations because they fear more weapons on the street. Here in Rhode Island the last 2 policemen killed on duty were shot by fellow policemen. Lastly is the office of the governor of the state of Rhode Island. He feels that ordinary citizens shouldn’t need to be able to defend themselves, their family or property. This person has a 24 hour armed state police guard watching his home and family. 31 other states have proven the soundness of the concept of the Right To Carry Law, it is time for RI to smarten up. Anyway these two articles are responsible for me not selling my savings bonds because I once again have faith in the future.
Sincerely,
Ed Mullen
